Project Description

Single mom living in north Denison with three small children needs help repairing the gas line under her house.  She has lived in this home for several years (her mother owns it), and recently smelled gas.  It may just be a small fitting leak, as the piping on the side of the house by the meter appears to be in good shape.  Atmos pulled the meter until repairs can be made and the integrity of the system approved (by a licensed plumber).  With cold weather approaching, this is a high priority as there is not other heat in the house.  Not sure about the water heater (check with the mom about that).

Overall, the house is in good condition, and recently had some leveling work performed (see photos).  The meter connection is on the north side, where the gas line runs under the house.  The clearance under the home is pretty tight, but someone (small) can slide under and check for leaks or position the new piping.  If the leak(s) can be found and repaired, that might be the easiest.  But running new pipe (1” carbon steel, non-galvanized) would not be too difficult.  The mom would like gas to the hall wall heater (20’ south from the meter), the kitchen stove (15’ west from the hall heater), and the bathroom (other side of the wall from the kitchen, no heater there now).

There is a 1” threaded female fitting where an air compressor can be connected (where the meter ties in) to pressurize the system for leak checks.  Might first trace out the line and check to see if a fitting is missing or loose (where a connection used to be).  Connections to the hall heater and kitchen stove also need to be checked for leaks.  The bathroom would need a hole cut in the floor to run the gas line through, for a future heater connection.

Once repairs are made, a licensed plumber may need to be contacted to inspect the work (not sure).  If needed, hopefully he would donate the inspection service.  Call Atmos to discuss the requirements.  Once the meter is reinstalled, relight the hall heater and kitchen stove and ensure that they work.

Optional:   Install 4 smoke alarms (kitchen, hall, 2 bedrooms).  Strongly recommended.

Purchase and install a small gas bathroom heater.  Would sure help keep the home warmer.
